As the soil around the item dries, the roots of nearby plants use capillary action to pull water through the porous terracotta so they can remain hydrated.
An aluminum rod with buoyant foam base sits inside the reservoir, and a black plastic orb completes this rod.
As the water depletes, the rod and orb sink downward, so you can tell at a glance when it is time to refill this vessel.
